Upcoming Workshop: Natural Pest Control & Organic Pesticides

Natural Pest Control & Organic Pesticides

An advanced-level, hands-on workshop

Farms at Work and Plan B Organic Farms have teamed up to offer a workshop in advanced techniques in natural pest control for farmers and market gardeners in east central Ontario. Taught by Dr. Fulvio Gioanetto (Doctor of Botany), expert in agroecological extension programs and the development of closed-loop input systems in Mexico, and a summer guest of Plan B Organic Farms, this advanced-level workshop will offer alternative solutions to pest control problems faced by market gardeners and farmers across the province.

Built on the research of Dr. Gioanetto, the workshop will focus on the use of wild plants as bioindicators of soil health; the production and demonstration of agroecological, insecticidal and fungicidal sprays made from common garden weeds and minerals; organic management of garlic nematodes; and a general discussion on compost and fertility. The day will include components of classroom-style lecture and discussion, as well as hands-on creation and use of various sprays in field settings.

The workshop will be held at Wheelbarrow Farm in Sunderland, ON (http://goo.gl/maps/j4t0z) on Sunday August 11th, from 10am to 4pm.  Tickets are $80 each and may be purchased by heading to: www.wildplantpesticides.eventbrite.ca. Pre-registration is required by Friday August 2nd at 4pm. Organic lunches will be available and can be purchased from host Tony Neale for an additional $12. Please let us know if you are interested in purchasing lunch by emailing Jay Adam. Otherwise, please plan on bringing your own lunch.

This valuable workshop has been offered to several groups in southwestern Ontario already this season, and will be the first and only time to learn from Dr. Gioanetto in east central Ontario before he returns to Mexico. At least 15 participants will be required in order for us to cover the costs of Dr. Gioanetto’s time, expertise and travel to the event, so pre-registration by 4pm on Friday August 2nd is required. But register soon as space is limited to 20 participants and interest in the workshop has generated quickly!
