The Peterborough Community Farm will be a hub of education, resources, and land access for new and establishing farm enterprises, community members, and local groups.
We’re envisioning a new kind of shared growing space — a Community Farm designed to improve access to farmland while fostering collaboration, learning, and innovation. Currently in its pilot year, with full launch in 2027,we are creating a hub with opportunities for community members, aspiring farmers, and local groups to grow food, build skills, and explore small-scale farm business ideas.
Our vision includes dedicated plots for hands-on learning, access to shared infrastructure such as greenhouse and cold storage spaces, mentorship and a welcoming environment where ecological farming practices can take root. Farms at Work is excited to share that in spring 2026 we secured a site for the Peterborough Community Farm on Matchett Line, located in Peterborough County and the Township of Otonabee-South Monaghan. Our sincere thanks and appreciation is extended to Jason Macintosh and JMAC Auctions for collaborating with us on this exciting project!
In 2025 and early 2026, we created a Case for Support that pulled together our research and community consultation over the past decade. In April 2026, we hired our Community Farm Planner, Andrea Hicks, to lead us through the next stage of developing detailed plans for education, mentoring, and acquiring capital infrastructure.
We’re actively engaging with community organizations, local food leaders, and aspiring growers to help shape the direction of the Peterborough Community Farm. These collaborations will be key to ensuring that the Peterborough Community Farm reflects a broad range of local needs, knowledge, and priorities. We are also fortunate to be working with the Just Food Farm in Ottawa and other organizations across the province who are providing advice and guidance.
In fall 2026, we will be embarking on a formal intake of participants to be part of our New Farmer Program during the 2027 growing season. This program will create pathways to success for new farmers by providing access to land, shared infrastructure, opportunities for hands-on learning, and business/financial planning.
